When I first ventured out into the “natural world”, my hair started
taking off in length like a rocket. Soon people started asking me about my hair
length goal…and to be perfectly honest, I didn’t really have one at the time. I
mean, I’ve always wanted long hair, as most black girls do, but I never had a
particular length in mind. After everything that I’ve been through with my hair,
getting it to grow past my ears was ideal for me (seriously). All in all, as
long as my curls did what they were supposed to do, which is, you know…curl,
then I was pretty much cool with any length. In fact, the stage of my natural
hair journey that I loved the most was when my hair was barely to my ears. You
could see my facial features and neck, my “baby hair” at the shaft of my neck,
along with the healthy curls, so my natural beauty shined the brightest at that
point in my journey. However, my hair did what hair does when it is taken care
of: it grew! The longer it got, the more I wanted it to grow even longer.
So now
I actually have a hair length goal: Mid-Back Length (MBL). Years ago, I didn’t
think that such a goal was even attainable, that it was as unrealistic as
flying white horses. But based on the hair growth that I’ve experienced within
these past three years, I’d say that MBL is VERY attainable. I went from
can’t-even-grip-it-to-braid-it short to shoulder length in two years so I figure
I should be MBL within the next couple of years. I’ve learned that hair length
goals should be determined what you know about your hair and how it has grown
since you’ve started your natural hair journey. How fast has it grown over the
past couple of years? Setting unrealistic hair length goals will only discourage you, so it is
very important to learn your hair growth rate and educate yourself on the hair
growth cycle (blog coming soon!). The best way to learn your hair growth is to
simply track your hair growth in pictures, being sure that the dates are noted.
This is easy to do these days with the use of social media outlets such as
Facebook and Instagram. ALL of my hair length pics were pulled from Facebook
(lol). I’m like“Wow my hair has grown since then! And I thought THAT was long!”
Without pictures, I wouldn’t really know how fast (or slow) my hair
grows.
To get me to my hair length goal even sooner, I decided to start taking
hair vitamins. My hair vitamin of choice is The Mane Choice by Manetabolism
(follow @courtneynaturalhair on Instagram if you are interested in trying them,
just to see pictures and testimonials of those who have been taking these
vitamins for a good while now). I purchased a two-month supply and will be
posting a review and before/after pictures on LMC shortly after finishing my
second bottle. I honestly cannot WAIT to see what these vitamins will do for me.
Stay tuned!
Do you have a hair length goal? Do you think that it is a
realistic one? What are you doing to meet that goal? Will you be taking any
hair vitamins to speed up the process?
